Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Closes Out Black Histor Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Closes Out Black History Month with Prayer Breakfast Celebrating Legacy of Leadership and Service

MIAMI — Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated®, Gamma Zeta Omega Chapter, brought Black History Month to a reverent and inspiring close with its annual Black History and Founders’ Day Prayer Breakfast, a gathering that blended faith, reflection, and a celebration of enduring service.

Held under the theme, “Legacy of Light: Faith, Leadership, and Service Throughout the Years,” the event honored the sorority’s 118-year history while recognizing the broader contributions of Black leaders who have shaped communities locally and nationally.

Pastor Richelle Lorde of Jesus People Ministries Church International served as mistress of ceremony, guiding attendees through a thoughtfully curated program that balanced spiritual grounding with powerful leadership messages.

The morning began with meditation led by Chapter Chaplain Ms. Tiqkia Barrow, followed by a welcome from Prayer Breakfast Chairman Mrs. Deborah Varnadore Simmons. Chapter President Dr. Mary D. Mites Campbell delivered greetings, emphasizing the sorority’s ongoing commitment to service and community uplift.

A saxophone serenade by Mr. Will Marcelin set a reflective tone before attendees enjoyed a buffet breakfast and a video presentation highlighting the sorority’s legacy.

The Honorable Frederica S. Wilson, U.S. Representative for Florida’s 24th Congressional District, introduced the keynote speaker, Dr. Glenda Baskin Glover, who previously served as the 30th International President and CEO of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, from 2018 to 2022.

Glover’s address underscored the importance of sustained leadership, economic empowerment, and the responsibility of Black women to continue lighting the path for future generations. She called on attendees to remain steadfast in their commitment to scholarship, sisterhood and service, noting that legacy is built through intentional action.

The program also featured a living museum presentation and musical selections by soloist Minister Sherry Moses. Prayers were offered by Ms. Sandra L. Jackson and Ms. Yvonne Young, with Barr

Today, we honor the life and legacy of Thelma Gibs Today, we honor the life and legacy of Thelma Gibson — a beloved trailblazer, community servant, and true pillar of Miami’s Black history. Born and raised in Coconut Grove in 1926, Thelma’s remarkable journey was defined by courage, compassion, and a relentless commitment to lifting others.

As one of the first Black nurses in Miami, she broke barriers in health care at a time of segregation and discrimination, showing resilience and grace in every challenge she faced. Her impact extended far beyond nursing — as a founder of the Miami-Dade Women’s Chamber of Commerce, a leader in affordable housing and civic inclusion, and a lifelong advocate for education, health, and community empowerment.

Gibson’s life was built on service, inclusivity, and love — values that touched countless lives and helped shape the cultural heartbeat of Coconut Grove and beyond. Today, we celebrate her legacy, her spirit, and the incredible life she lived.

Rest in peace, Thelma Gibson — your work, your stories, and your profound influence will continue to inspire generations to come.
