The New Florida Majority has launched a petition in response to recent proposed Florida legislation. Governor Ron DeSantis proposed a bill that could turn what is normally a misdemeanor into a 3rd degree felony for protestors, and add more protections to police officers in Florida. This bill is a direct attack on Black and Brown marginalized communities and it must be stopped.
Under this bill protestors will:
Automatically be charged with a 3rd degree felony if involved in “disorderly assembly” (which is completely subjective to who is arresting you);
- Have a minimum jail sentence of 6 months;
- Have no right to bail. You must stay in jail until your court date;
- Lose your government benefits.
The deaths of Jamee Johnson, George Floyd and Breonna Taylor have prompted Floridians to call for the end of police brutality and demand police accountability. However, instead of addressing community concerns, the Governor has turned a blind eye to the pain of Black and Brown communities and chosen to protect police officers.
Peaceful protesting is a right written into our Constitution, and we can’t continue to sit back and watch as politicians create laws that suppress our voices, our lives and our rights.
