Let’s Celebrate Our Black Owned Businesses!

Commissioner Kionne McGhee

One of my proudest moments has been to officially declare the month of August as “Black Business Month” in Miami Dade County, an ordinance I had the privilege to sponsor and one which was supported by the Board of County Commissioners and Mayor Daniella Levine-Cava. This month-long initiative, developed in collaboration with the Black Affairs Advisory Board and the Greater Miami Convention and Visitors Bureau (GMCVB), aims to shine a spotlight on the thriving Black business community in our county.

Our community partners, including the Miami Dade Public Library System, Miami Dade Tax Collector, Florida State Minority Supplier Development Council, Miami Dade Chamber of Commerce, Miami Dade NAACP, and Miami MBDA Business Center, among others, are joining hands to support and promote Black-owned businesses throughout Miami Dade County.

Did you know that Black-owned businesses make up a significant portion of our local economy? Here are some eye-opening statistics:
– Black-owned businesses comprise 10.95% of the 468,185 business firms in Miami Dade County.
– These businesses generate over $2.3 Billion in annual sales, receipts, and total value of shipments.
– They employ a total of 12,227 individuals, managing a combined annual payroll of over $320 million.
– Miami Dade County is proudly ranked 5th in the nation for the largest number of Black-owned employer businesses.

Let’s come together this August to support, uplift, and celebrate the achievements of our Black entrepreneurs and business owners. By supporting Black-owned businesses, we are not just investing in our economy but also empowering and strengthening our community as a whole.
