Commissioner Kionne L. McGhee and Miami-Dade Parks Break Ground on New Aquatic Center at Southridge Park

Miami-Dade County Commissioner (District 9) Kionne L. McGhee and Miami-Dade County Parks, Recreation, and Open Spaces broke ground for the construction of a state-of-the-art community center and aquatic facility at Southridge Park, located at 11250 SW 192nd Street, Miami, FL, 33157.

This significant event marks a new chapter for the community, bringing enhanced recreational and social opportunities to residents of all ages. Situated between a passive park to the south and active playfields to the north and west, the new community center will include a welcoming lobby and reception area, multifunction rooms, a children’s playroom, a fitness center, restrooms, showers, and lockers.

The adjoining aquatic facility will feature a swimming pool and splash pad, seamlessly connecting to the larger park and community through walkways. The project will also enhance off-street parking, landscaped courtyard areas, and spaces for public art.

Commissioner Kionne L. McGhee emphasized the community investment, “The size and scale of this project, as well as its proximity to Southridge High School, really shows that the county is invested in our community. We know this will enrich and strengthen the lives of our constituents.”

Director Maria I. Nardi highlighted the commitment to quality, “Our Miami-Dade County Parks, and Open Space System Master Plan has a mission of ensuring all residents in the county have access to high-quality parks in their communities. Facilities like this one really reflect Parks’ commitment to excellence and placemaking.”

The construction of the new aquatic center at Southridge Park is anticipated to positively impact the community and bring numerous benefits to the surrounding area.  Studies have shown that access to an aquatic facility significantly enhances the quality of life for residents. Swimming is recognized as one of the most effective forms of exercise for both children and seniors, providing a low-impact workout that is beneficial for cardiovascular health and muscle strength. Children who learn to swim early are less likely to experience drowning.
