THE BLACK ARCHIVES ANNOUNCES LIVE AND VIRTUAL EVENTS FOR BLACK HISTORY MONTH
MIAMI, FL January 26, 2021– The Black Archives History & Research Foundation of South Florida will reopen its in Black History Month for a schedule of events, kicking off with a Lyric Live Allstar Salute to Betty Wright on Friday, Feb 5 at 8pm. The event will feature comedian host Chello Davis, live music by Jody Hill & Deep Fried Funk Band, DJ H2 and Showtyme Junkanoo Band. Tribute performances by Lyric Live alumni, including VesSoul (Season 3 Winner); Laurana Strachan (Season 5 Winner); and James P. Jackson, Jr. (Lyric Live Alumni). The show will feature a special guest performance by recording artist Angie Griffin, the Miami songstress behind the 1980s R&B hits, “Toby,” “Rain,” “Savin’ Myself for You,” and “Gentle.” In-person and online viewing tickets are available for this
show. Seating will be at a reduced capacity, and social distancing measures will be implemented.
On Sunday, February 7, beginning at 5 pm the Black Archives hosts its 4th Annual Super Bowl Watch Party on the
Lyric Plaza. The party includes live music by DJ H2, pool tables, concessions, bar, cigars, and more, while watching Super Bowl LV on the big screen at a socially distanced outdoor event. This free community event will be at limited capacity, so registration is required at the ticket link below.
Launched in 2019 as Miami’s newest urban comedy night, the GlassHouse Comedy Experience, returns on Friday, Feb. 19 at 8 pm. Hosted by Chello, this adults-only night of raw, uncensored, and uncut stand-up comedy will feature comedians Pookie F. Baby, Jay Reid (Showtime, B.E.T., & TVOne), and Gin Thomas (Wild N Out writer, Katt Williams 11:11 RNS World Tour, Winner of Bet Apollo Live). This is a live event. Seating will be at a reduced capacity, and social distancing measures will be implemented.
On Monday, February 22 at 7pm, the Black Archives presents “Still Waters Run Deep: The Fight for Beach Access Across America,” a virtual panel on segregated beaches throughout the U.S., the circumstances around their creation, and the protests and legal battles against these unfair racist practices. Panelists will include representatives of historic Black beaches, historians, authors, and Black Archives staff. Free registration via Zoom, program will be broadcast live on Facebook and YouTube.
The Black Archives will close out Black History Month with its partner program, the 24th Annual Melton Mustafa
Jazz Festival. From Friday, February 26 to Sunday, February 28, the Black Archives hosts the weekend-long
signature jazz event founded by the late Melton Mustafa, Sr. The festival begins outdoors with “Jazz on the Plaza,” a night of poetry and jazz, featuring Chello Davis, May Reign, Will Serious, Jania Harden, Lauren Posey, Allen Paul, Dony Felix, Eddie Balzola, Harvel Naundi and others. Saturday’s events include virtual jazz workshops with clinicians Jesse Jones Jr., Lenard Rutledge, Tal Cohen, James Cotman, and Paul Shewchuk; and a jazz mixer at Lil Greenhouse Grill that evening. Sunday is the big closing concert, featuring international trumpeter Marquis Hill, multi-instrumentalist Jason Marshall, international saxophonist Jesse Jones Jr., vocalist Lenard Rutledge, Yamin Mustafa, James Cotman, Jim Gasio, Marty Quinn, Tal Cohen and the legendary Melton Mustafa Orchestra.
