Vice Chairman Kionne L. McGhee Leads Effort to Protect Active Military Families and all Federal Workers During the Federal Shutdown
In a decisive move to support those who serve our nation, the Miami-Dade County Board of County Commissioners today approved legislation sponsored by Vice Chairman Kionne L. McGhee directing the Miami-Dade Water and Sewer Department (WASD) to suspend all water disconnections for active military personnel and all federal workers during the federal government shutdown and for 60 days thereafter.
The measure ensures that service members, all federal workers and their families will not face the burden of losing access to water due to financial hardship while the federal government remains shut down.
“No soldier should fight for our freedom only to lose access to water at home,” said Vice Chairman McGhee. “This legislation honors service with compassion — because those who protect us deserve protection too.”
The temporary stay on disconnections does not waive payment obligations but prevents service interruptions, giving affected military and federal workers’ households critical stability during uncertain times. To qualify, active-duty military personnel and all federal workers will need to provide proof of current service to WASD.
The resolution reflects Miami-Dade County’s continued commitment to veterans, active military members, and all federal workers, ensuring that essential services remain uninterrupted even in moments of national uncertainty.
“Service doesn’t pause — and neither should our support,” McGhee added. “This is how Miami-Dade stands up for those who stand guard for us.”
