Federal shutdown threatens to interrupt SNAP benefits

As the federal government shutdown threatens to interrupt Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits starting November 1, Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava said the County is prepared to respond swiftly to protect residents facing food insecurity.

“As the federal shutdown threatens to interrupt SNAP benefits starting November 1, Miami-Dade stands ready to coordinate with our trusted community partners to activate emergency food distribution operations through a coordinated response framework,” Levine Cava said in a statement.

The Mayor announced that the County is partnering with United Way Miami, Farm Share, and Feeding South Florida to expand emergency food distributions in high-need areas, align operations with County departments, and deliver essential support to families experiencing hardship.

“Our shared goal is to ensure no Miami-Dade family goes hungry during this difficult time,” Levine Cava added.

The coordinated response will prioritize neighborhoods with the highest concentration of SNAP recipients, with support from the Miami-Dade County Department of Emergency Management and the Community Services Department. The County will also provide logistical support including staging, communications, and volunteer coordination.
