
The Black Archives Announces Its Inaugural Family Roots Festival, Celebrating National Family History Month in South Florida
The Black Archives History & Research Foundation of South Florida, Inc. is proud to announce
the inaugural Family Roots Festival, a signature community event in recognition of National Family History Month. The festival will take place on Saturday, October 25, 2025, from 12:00 PM to 4:00 PM at the Black Archives Historic Lyric Theater, located at 819 NW 2nd Avenue, Miami, FL 33136.
Event Highlights:
• Genealogy Workshops: Engage with local experts in genealogy workshops offering practical guidance on tracing family roots and utilizing digital research tools. Family genealogists Patricia J. Braynon and husband, Oscar Braynon will share helpful tips on starting your own journey, while author and media mogul Jessica Garrett Modkins shares identifies some considerations to make when recording family history vs. general community history for the most meaningful outcomes.
• Interactive Storytelling and Oral History Segments: Experience personal family histories and traditions shared by community members, presented by HistoryMiami and the Black Broward Film Project. Attendees will also have the opportunity to record and contribute their stories to the Black Archives’ digital collection, supporting the preservation of local heritage.
• Children’s Activity Zone: Enjoy youth activities presented by the FIU Bob Moses Research Center and Little Lovett Petite Party Experience, designed to engage and educate the younger generation.
• Live Music and Entertainment: Immerse yourself in a festival atmosphere with live performances by local musicians, cultural groups, and the Lyric’s house vibesetter DJ H2, creating an energetic and celebratory environment throughout the day.
