Miami Gardens Unveils Nation’s First Street Named for The Links, Incorporated

Civic leaders, elected officials and members of The Links, Incorporated gathered Saturday for the unveiling of The Links, Incorporated Way in Miami Gardens, marking the first street in the nation to bear the organization’s name.

The ceremony drew local, state and national figures, including U.S. Rep. Frederica S. Wilson, D-Fla., Miami-Dade Commissioner Oliver G. Gilbert III, Mayor Rodney Harris, Councilman Reggie Leon and Councilwoman Linda Julien of Miami Gardens, and Florida state Reps. Felicia S. Robinson, D-Miami Gardens, and Ashley V. Gantt, D-Miami.

The program was led by Mistress of Ceremonies Jessica Garrett Modkins of the Greater Miami (FL) Chapter. The invocation was offered by Dr. Linda J. Johnson, also of the Greater Miami (FL) Chapter, and the Pledge of Allegiance was led by Georgia McLean of the Miami-Biscayne Bay (FL) Chapter.

Local Links chapter presidents Sabrina Thomas Knight (Greater Miami), Teresa Brown (Dade County) and Reva Vangates (Miami-Biscayne Bay) delivered greetings, joined by Anne Turner Herriott of the National Executive Board.

The event’s keynote was delivered by National President Ethel Isaacs Williams, J.D., who framed the unveiling as a testament to the organization’s mission and its ongoing impact. Explained clearly that there is work to be done. “Dedication, Education, Ingenuity = DEI,” Williams said. “Leave the door cracked for those coming behind us.”

Founded in 1946, The Links, Incorporated is one of the nation’s oldest and largest volunteer service organizations of professional women of African descent, with 17,000 members across 299 chapters. Saturday’s unveiling symbolizes the group’s legacy of civic engagement and community leadership.

Councilman Reggie Leon, who led the sign presentation, said the new street name cements Miami Gardens’ place in history. “We are proud to be the home of the first street in the United States dedicated to The Links, Incorporated,” he said.

The program concluded with a closing prayer by Rev. Tawnicia Rowan of the Dade County (FL) Chapter, followed by a toast and reception.
