Miami Gardens Councilman Reggie Leon Hosts “A Tribute to the Divine Nine” on Eve of Orange Blossom Classic

City of Miami Gardens Councilman Reggie Leon presented A Tribute to the Divine Nine: Honoring the Legacy on Saturday evening at Hard Rock Stadium, bringing together national leaders of the nine historically Black Greek-letter organizations for a night of celebration, recognition and unity.

The event, staged on the eve of the annual Orange Blossom Classic, featured an elaborate façade illuminated with the shields of each fraternity and sorority, providing a symbolic backdrop for the historic gathering.

Among those honored were Danette Anthony Reed, International President and CEO of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.; Lucien J. Metellus, Jr., General President of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc.; Hon. Chris V. Rey, J.D., International President of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc.; Ricky L. Lewis, the 42nd Grand Basileus of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc.; Orlando Grant, Grand Polaris of Iota Phi Theta Fraternity, Inc.; Dr. Stacie NC Grant, International President and CEO of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc.; Cheryl W. Turner, International President and Chair of the National Board of Directors of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.; Marica Harris, International Grand Basileus of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc.; and Jimmy McMikle, Grand Polemarch of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc.

Congresswoman Frederica Wilson attended the celebration, recognizing Leon for his commitment to the community. Leon was officially read into the United States Congressional Record for his continued service and leadership.  Leon said, “I am deeply honored and incredibly grateful to Congresswoman Frederica Wilson for bestowing upon me a Congressional Record for my public service as a City Councilmember of the greatest City in the world!

Leon went on to say, ” This recognition is a profound honor, and it is a humbling reminder that my work stands on the shoulders of giants. The unwavering dedication of countless leaders, mentors, and community members built the foundation for our great city. Their vision and hard work inspired my own civic engagement, and I am committed to continuing their legacy of service.

Wilson went on to award the Miami-Dade National Pan-Hellenic Council $1.1 million in funding, issuing a charge to members of the Divine Nine to ensure Black history is preserved and told for generations to come.

Wilson explained that when the colors are all off, we have a mission as Black people to make sure our history is preserved and told.

The festive evening served as both a tribute to the legacy of historically Black fraternities and sororities and a reminder of their continued influence in advancing leadership, education and community empowerment.
