FPL’s BePowerFL Initiative Hosts Bradenton Event to Empower Minority-Owned Businesses

By Julia Franklin

Minority entrepreneurs from across Florida gathered Thursday evening at Empowering Minority
Entrepreneurs: Strategies for Growth, Financing, and Contract Success, a business education
forum hosted by Florida Power & Light Company (FPL) through its BePowerFL initiative. Held at
720 Venue in Bradenton, the event was designed to equip business owners with practical
strategies for growth—covering everything from securing contracts and accessing capital to
embracing modern tools like artificial intelligence.

The event was part of FPL’s broader commitment to advancing opportunities for minority-owned
businesses through its Powering Florida’s Minority-Owned Businesses educational
programming. It brought together business owners, corporate leaders, and community partners
to tackle persistent challenges and spark new connections.

“Minority-owned businesses are the backbone of our communities,” said Mistress of
Ceremonies Tarnisha L. Cliatt, President and CEO of the Manasota Black Chamber of
Commerce. “Tonight was about putting valuable tools in the hands of business owners so they
can grow and thrive.”

Guests kicked off the evening with networking and light bites before diving into a series of panel
discussions focused on actionable business development strategies.

From the Gridiron to Growth
Former NFL linebacker turned entrepreneur Sammuel Barrington delivered a keynote that
inspired the room. Sharing his journey from professional sports to business ownership,
Barrington emphasized the power of mindset, faith, and strategic planning in building a
successful enterprise.

How to Win Contracts with FPL
Jessica Garrett Modkins, founder of Hip Rock Star Advertising, moderated a session that pulled
back the curtain on how businesses can work with FPL and other large corporations. Panelists
Verdell Hawkins, FPL’s Manager of Economic Development, and Jennifer DeValerio, Director of
Supplier Diversity at NextEra Energy, spoke on certifications, compliance, and long-term
supplier relationships. “We want to make the procurement process more transparent and accessible,” said Hawkins. “There’s room at the table—we want to see more diverse businesses there.”

Marketing in the Age of AI
The second panel focused on digital marketing and artificial intelligence. Panelists included
Elston Brown, CEO of eMagine Web Services; Amaia Cliatt, owner of TLC Quality Cleaning
Service; and Dr. Patricia Hauser, radio host and pastor. Moderated again by Modkins, the
discussion covered practical AI tools, customer targeting, and building brand identity.
“AI isn’t the future—it’s now,” said Brown. “Using the right tools can help small businesses scale
without losing their personal touch.”

Capital, Credit & Cash Flow
Charles McClendon, President of No Ceilings, LLC, led the final panel on funding and financial
preparedness. Nicole Parker of Bank of America and Miguel Jimenez of JP Morgan Chase
offered advice on everything from business banking relationships to navigating alternative
funding options.

“Most businesses don’t struggle from a lack of vision—they struggle from unclear financials,”
said Parker. “Good numbers open doors.”

Community Connections & Vendor Showcase
The evening wrapped up with a vendor spotlight and speed networking session, giving
attendees a chance to meet one-on-one with financial institutions, service providers, and each
other. Local businesses featured in the showcase included TLC Quality Cleaning, Doc Smith
Medical Practice, Warrick Wellness Center, The Bougie Palate Catering, and Mary Butler
Cleaning Services.

Looking Ahead
FPL’s BePowerFL program continues to grow its educational offerings across Florida, with a
focus on providing real tools and real access for minority-owned businesses.

“Knowledge is just the beginning,” said Modkins in her closing remarks. “Tonight was about
building momentum—and we’re just getting started.”
