Smith, ESPN agree to 5-year extension. The deal is worth at least $100 million, AP source says

Stephen A. Smith will not be leaving ESPNโ€™s airwaves anytime soon.

ESPN announced on Friday that it has agreed to a five-year extension with Smith after nearly a year of negotiations. ESPN did not announce financial terms but a person with knowledge of the agreement told The Associated Press that it is at least $100 million.

The person spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity because they werenโ€™t authorized to discuss financial matters. Smithโ€™s contract with ESPN was slated to expire in July.

The Athletic was the first to report on Thursday that Smith had agreed to an extension.

โ€œIโ€™ve got a lot of things that I want to achieve and accomplish in my life that extend beyond this show and beyond the world of sports. But it all starts here. Iโ€™m always proud to be associated with this network,โ€ Smith said on โ€œFirst Takeโ€ Friday morning. โ€œIโ€™m happy that Iโ€™m going to be here for a lengthy period of time for years. Iโ€™m really happy. Iโ€™m happy that itโ€™s done.โ€

Smith will continue to be the featured personality and executive producer on โ€œFirst Take,โ€ which is the networkโ€™s top morning show. Smith joined โ€œFirst Takeโ€ in 2012 and was the co-host with Skip Bayless until Bayless left for Fox four years later.

By the time Baylessโ€™ โ€œUndisputedโ€ program was canceled on Fox Sports 1 last year, โ€œFirst Takeโ€ was drawing more than five times as many viewers.

Smith will continue to have some presence in ESPNโ€™s NBA coverage, but he will have an expanded role in NFL programming. Smith is expected to have a regular role on โ€œMonday Night Countdownโ€ after making spot appearances in the past.

Smith will also be free to pursue his interests outside of sports, through his Mr. SAS Productions company. He has a popular YouTube show and podcast where he discusses a wide range of topics and has appeared in the past on CNN and Fox News to discuss political issues.

โ€œStephen A. works incredibly hard to elevate the sports conversation day-in and day-out and we are grateful he will remain at ESPN,โ€ Pitaro said in a statement. โ€œHe is a difference maker, and fans are captivated by his deep sports knowledge, strong opinions and unmistakable flair.โ€

Smith has even been discussed as a candidate for the Democratic Partyโ€™s 2028 presidential nomination. He played coy with his intentions during an appearance with Jimmy Fallon on NBCโ€™s โ€œThe Tonight Showโ€ on Wednesday.

โ€œI did not ask for this. I donโ€™t want to do this. I happen to have a very, very, very good life. A very good job. Iโ€™m good. Iโ€™m saying, โ€˜wait a minute now, I donโ€™t want to do this.โ€™ But the fact that theyโ€™re talking about me this way, I must say, I approve this message,โ€ Smith said with a grin.

Smith was sitting courtside in Los Angeles on Thursday night for the Lakersโ€™ 113-109 overtime victory over the New York Knicks. At least one person, though, did not appear happy to see him.

โ€œI am pleading with LeBron James, as a father. Stop this. Stop this. We all know that Bronny James is in the NBA because of his dad,โ€ Smith said.

Smith addressed the incident at the beginning of Friday morningโ€™s episode of โ€œFirst Take.โ€ He said he wasnโ€™t upset about being confronted by James, but wished it would have taken place in a different setting.

โ€œI donโ€™t blame LeBron James for being upset. I donโ€™t blame him for being angry,โ€ Smith said. ” I donโ€™t blame him for wanting to confront me because that wasnโ€™t a superstar basketball player that confronted me โ€” he played like one again last night, which just reminds you of his focus and his greatness โ€” but that was a dad.โ€
