Celebrate Juneteenth in Miami-Dade County: A Weeklong Festivity

Juneteenth, also known as the United States’ Second Independence Day, marks the historic date of June 19, 1865, when U.S. General Gordon Granger announced the freedom of enslaved individuals in Galveston, Texas. This significant event came nearly two-and-a-half years after President Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation in 1863.

Juneteenth, officially designated a federal holiday in June 2021, is a time to honor Black ancestors, reflect on the nation’s history, and celebrate Black freedom. Miami-Dade County hosts a variety of events to commemorate this important day, offering residents and visitors numerous opportunities to engage with the history and culture of Juneteenth.
