Juneteenth celebrates the abolition of slavery in the United States, which occurred in Galveston, Texas on June 19, 1865. This came more than two years after President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation. In 1991, Florida designated June 19 of each year as “Juneteenth Day.” In June 2021, Juneteenth was declared an official federal holiday.
