City of North Miami Black History Events Recap

Every February, the City of North Miami hosts a myriad of highly anticipated events to honor Black History Month.

The Mayor’s Conversation Series’ co-hosted by North Miami Mayor Desulme and Miami Gardens Councilwoman Linda Julien, featuring Former Ohio State Senator and CNN Political Commentator Nina Turner, was held on Friday, February 24, 2023, at North Miami Senior High School. The conversation was focused on the national Black History Month theme, Black Resistance.

Nina Turner on the theme Black Resistance:

“Resistance is the ability in my mind to be able to reckon with what current reality is. And if that reality is not steeped in justice and love and progress, to be able to declare through your actions and your deeds that you are not going to settle for what is, even though you understand what is, but you’re gonna work for what can be. And certainly the history of African American people, of black people, the great novelists Zora Neal Hurston called us, the people whose skin has been kissed by the sun. We certainly understand through our whole being, both past, present, and
future, what it means to resist oppression.”

The festivities culminated with the 7th Annual NoMi Music Festival on Saturday, February 25, 2023, at Cagni Park. The Music Festival was an unforgettable night including DJ Tight spinning old-school hits, a wide array of food truck selections, and friends gathered under the stars of North Miami. The night was hosted by Chubb Rock and featured live musical performances by En Vogue, Stephanie Mills, 112, Atlantic Starr, Miki Howard, and B Howard. Proceeds from ticket sales support North Miami Utility Emergency Fund, which benefits North Miami residents in financial distress.
