COMMISSIONER MCGHEE SPONSORING RICHMOND HEIGHTS JUNETEENTH WEEKEND CELEBRATION

Commissioner Kionne L. McGhee is sponsoring the Richmond Heights Juneteenth Weekend Celebration to commemorate the holiday weekend.

On Friday, June 17, Commissioner McGhee, in partnership with the Richmond Heights Community Association and Anvil Community Development Corporation, is sponsoring the Artwalk Presents Richmond Heights Juneteenth Celebration from 5-9 p.m., at 14700 Lincoln Blvd., Richmond Heights, FL 33176. This free community event will include food and artisan vendors, live music, and performances. For more information on this event, visit  www.artwalkpresents.com or contact info@artwalkpresents.com or 786-310-2898.

The celebration will continue Saturday, June 18, with the 2nd annual Juneteenth Kickball Showdown at Sgt. Joseph Delancy Park, 14450 Boggs Dr., Miami, FL 33176. Registration will take place from 8-8:30 a.m., and the games will begin at 9 a.m. There will be free music and resources provided by local vendors, free team refreshments, and food trucks on-site. Special guest DJ Nasty will also be providing entertainment. For more information on this event, contact Michelle Fletcher, District Coordinator for Commissioner McGhee, at Michelle.Fletcher@miamidade.gov or 786-351-2988.

“It’s always a great time when District 9 residents come together. I’m grateful that we, as a community, can safely gather and celebrate Juneteenth this year. It’s an important day – not only for the Black community – but for our nation,” said Commissioner McGhee.

Juneteenth celebrates the abolition of slavery in the United States, which occurred in Galveston, Texas on June 19, 1865, when all remaining slaves were freed. This came more than two years after President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation, which freed the slaves of the Confederate states in rebellion against the Union. In 1991, Florida designated June 19 of each year as “Juneteenth Day.” In June 2021, Juneteenth was declared an official federal holiday.
