SPIKE LEE IS THE FIRST BLACK DIRECTOR TO BE HONORED WITH THE LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD

A lifetime achievement award for distinguished achievement in motion picture direction will be awarded to Brooklyn’s finest, Spike Lee. Lee is set to be the first Black person to receive this award from the Directors Guild of America.

The DGA award recognizes exemplary and extraordinary efforts in the field of filmmaking.

“Icon. Trailblazer. Visionary. Spike Lee has changed the face if cinema and there is no single word that encapsulates his significance to the art of directing,” DGA president Lesli Linka Glatte said in a statement.

Spike Lee is an innovator who has entertained the masses with his exceptional talent to portray a story with such passion that it hooks the audience without losing his signature bold style.

“From his groundbreaking Do the Right Thing, BlacKkKlansman and everything in between — to his signature ‘double dolly’ shot, Spike is an innovator on so many levels. His bold and passionate storytelling over the past three decades has masterfully entertained, as it held a stark mirror to our society and culture.”

“And while he is no stranger to huge commercial success, he is also the beating heart of independent film. Even as countless filmmakers call Spike their mentor and inspiration, he continues to devote his time to teaching future generations how to make their mark. We are thrilled to present Spike with the DGA’s highest honour.”

Lee’s career as a director began thirty years ago. Over time, he directed School Daze, Do the right thing, Crooklyn. Clockers, Summer of Sam, Girl 6, Get on the bus, Inside man, Bamboozled, She hates me, Red Hook Summer, and many more
