THE IMPACT HBCU HOMECOMING HAS ON THE CULTURE

Homecoming at an HBCU is more than just a gathering of Black people. We have fun and turn up! It’s like one big happy family reunion with long-lost cousins, the uncle who shows up in his cookout sandals, and the auntie who throws down. From the tailgate to the parade and step show, it’s a time where everyone comes together simply for the culture!

“Colleges and universities all have homecoming, but at HBCUs, it’s a full show with something for everyone and a deep embracing of the institution and the memories. Students are engulfed by generations of alumni who love the institution and also want the students to succeed and truly understand the importance of the HBCU in their lives,” Marybeth Gasman, an HBCU historian and a professor at the University of Pennsylvania, told YahooLife.

HBCUs represent the progress and achievements of Black people when secondary education was not an option because of the color of our skin. Alumni then and now are a true testament to Black culture, and it’s important that every year we come together to celebrate Black excellence!

The week-long activities surrounding homecomings, both before and after the game, are numerous, but let’s get into the games for the remainder of the season! Check out the schedule below.
