ISSA RAE COSIGNS ‘BYBLACK’ INITIATIVE IN HOPES INSPIRE BLACK-OWNED BUSINESSES

American Express and the U. S. Black Chambers announced the launch of the ByBlack initiative. The program provides national certifications to exclusively Black-owned businesses.

Initially, the initiative was systematized as a black-owned business directory. However, recent advancements have turned it into more of an unremunerative digital platform. This platform works for the growth and expansion of Black-owned businesses in the United States.

The initiative was cosigned by award-winning actress, writer, and producer Issa Rae who co-owns a natural hair care business, Sienna Naturals, with Hannah Diop. She certified Sienna Naturals through ByBlack in hopes of reaching more customers and connecting with other black-owned companies.

“We have only scratched the surface of the collective power of Black businesses, so I am excited to join American Express and the USBC to shine a light on the opportunities ByBlack presents,” Rae said in the release. “ByBlack is a powerful platform that connects Black business owners with new revenue streams and helps all of us find and shop at standout businesses. Together we can spread the word to support small Black businesses.”

According to Essence, Uber and Verizon are among other companies that have recognized the Black certification program.

According to American Express’ Small Summer Study, “44% of consumers seek out Black-owned businesses, and 55% say they would be likely to use an official, easy-to-access digital database that certifies a business as being Black-owned,” In fact, the Black business empire produces more than $150 billion in income.

To help further the growth of Black businesses, American Express is working alongside major powerhouse companies to generate unsurpassed access, opportunities, and familiarity for black-owned enterprises. American Express is devoted to giving access to commissioned and capital education to 250,000 small and moderate Black businesses in the United States by the end of 2024. Their $1 billion action strategy aims to encourage equal opportunities and improve distinct representation.

The ByBlack program is for businesses that are at least 51% black-owned and are managed by a Black business owner. Applicants are also required to give proof of identification. If you fulfill the above conditions, the next steps are simple and would take only around 30 minutes of your time.
