JR SMITH ENROLLED AT HBCU TO PLAY GOLF

Former NBA Champion J.R. Smith proves that it is never too late to go back to college. After securing NCAA eligibility, Smith is going to play golf for the North Carolina A&T State University Aggies.

“One of the best liberal studies programs is at A&T and it just so happens I’ve got deep roots in Carolina with Chris Paul, C.J. Paul,” Smith told the local news station. “It’s been a long time since I’ve been in school. I’m excited though. It’s new challenge. I’ve got nothing but free time right now. Between raising kids and going to school, my schedule is pretty full.”

About 12 years ago, Smith learned the game from the Basketball Hall of Famer Moses Malone.

“Golf is one of those games that can have you feeling really high or it can bring you down to your knees and humble you,” the 35-year-old said. “To have that feeling and knowing that all of the game is pretty much on my own hands and I don’t have to worry about teammates to pass the ball to, receiving passes and playing defense — I can just play my game and have fun.”

According to a 2014 Q&A in Bleacher Report, he was just riding in a cart when Malone told him to get out and hit the ball. After Smith went yard, there was no looking back! He’s been out golfing ever since.

Smith last played in the NBA in 2020, winning an NBA title with the Los Angeles Lakers. Smith also won a championship in 2016, playing alongside LeBron James, and was named Sixth Man of the Year in 2013.

Welcome to the HBCU Family, J.R. Smith! When one wins, we all do!
