TAYLOR LEAVES ESPN AFTER FAILING TO REACH CONTRACT EXTENSION

By JOE REEDY – AP News

Maria Taylor is leaving ESPN after the two sides were unable to reach an agreement on a contract extension.

Taylor had been with ESPN since 2014 but her contract expired Tuesday. Her last assignment for the network was Tuesday night at the NBA Finals, where she was the pregame and postgame host for the networkโ€™s โ€œNBA Countdownโ€ show.

โ€œSo thankful to Jimmy (Pitaro) and all of my great teammates and friends at the SEC Network, College GameDay, Womenโ€™s and Menโ€™s college basketball, and the NBA Countdown family โ€” the people who believed in me, encouraged me, pushed me, and lifted me up,โ€ Taylor said in a statement released through ESPN. โ€œWords are inadequate to express my boundless appreciation, and I hope to make them proud.โ€

Taylor had hosted โ€œNBA Countdownโ€ since 2019 as well as being a reporter for โ€œCollege GameDayโ€ and ABC โ€œSaturday Night Footballโ€ since 2017.

โ€œMariaโ€™s remarkable success speaks directly to her abilities and work ethic,โ€ ESPN chairman Jimmy Pitaro said in a statement. โ€œThere is no doubt we will miss Maria, but we remain determined to continue to build a deep and skilled talent roster that thoroughly reflects the athletes we cover and the fans we serve. While she chose to pursue a new opportunity, we are proud of the work weโ€™ve done together.โ€

Nichols, who is white, was introduced in September 2019 as the NBA Finals host but the network later decided to promote Taylor, who is Black.

Nichols said in an accidentally recorded phone call obtained by the Times: โ€œI wish Maria Taylor all the success in the world โ€” she covers football, she covers basketball. If you need to give her more things to do because you are feeling pressure about your crappy longtime record on diversity โ€” which, by the way, I know personally from the female side of it โ€” like, go for it. Just find it somewhere else. You are not going to find it from me or taking my thing away.โ€

Nichols apologized on July 5 while hosting โ€œThe Jump.โ€ She was slated to be the sideline reporter for the Finals, but was pulled off the assignment.

Pitaro said last week in a memo to ESPN employees: โ€œWe respect and acknowledge there are a variety of feelings about what happened and the actions we took. The details of what took place last year are confidential, nuanced and complicated personnel matters.

โ€œMaria Taylor was selected as โ€˜NBA Countdownโ€™ host last year because she earned it. Please know our commitment is that assignments and opportunities at ESPN are based on merit and any concerns, remarks, or inferences that suggest otherwise have been and will continue to be addressed.โ€

Pitaroโ€™s memo, which was obtained by AP, also stated that 52% of the talent hires made over the past year were people of color and 42% were female. He also stated that 63% of ESPNโ€™s executive leadership team is made up of women and/or people of color.

NBC and Amazon are favored to be Taylorโ€™s next stops. Taylor could host โ€œFootball Night in Americaโ€ if Mike Tirico moves to the booth next season. Al Michaelsโ€™ contract expires at the end of the upcoming season. Taylor could join the network immediately and have a role in its coverage of the Tokyo Olympics.

NBC also has Notre Dame football and opportunities in its news division. Amazon becomes the exclusive carrier of the NFLโ€™s Thursday night package next season.
