CELEBRITIES AND FANS REACT TO ‘COMING 2 AMERICA’

Over the weekend, Amazon premiered the sequel to Coming to America, and it proved to be a huge success for the platform.

“For the past 33 years, the original 1988 film has been regarded as one of the most iconic films in the Black community. We wanted fans of Eddie Murphy and the original blockbuster to be surprised and delighted with every experience because we were passionate fans too!” said Ukonwa Ojo, Global Chief Marketing Officer at Amazon Prime.

Coming 2 America is reportedly the #1 streamed movie of the weekend, beating the Disney+ premiere of Raya and the Last Dragon. According to Screen Engine, Coming 2 America had the biggest opening weekend of any streaming movie in the last 12 months. The movie’s premiere weekend might have done fantastic, but fans, especially Black Twitter, had very mixed reviews.

Celebrities like Lebron James and Chance The Rapper had nothing but positive things to say about the movie, but I don’t think that holds much weight given that they probably would’ve been dragged by cancel culture if they critiqued the film just a little.

Comin to America‘ was legendary and had such an impact on the culture. Let’s be honest, it’s pretty hard to top that! I think ‘Comin 2 America‘ was made to be more of a tribute sequel and a reunion than anything else. It brought value and cultural relevance, and that’s what really matters at the end of the day.
