OPA-LOCKA: CELEBRATES 94 YEARS + NORTH DADE’S ONLY 12 & OLDER COVID-19 TESTING SITE

The City of Opa-locka Council decided to celebrate the city’s long standing history in Miami-Dade county throughout 2020 as it reflected on 94 years. The city was incorporated on May 14, 1926 and is fashioned in Moorish Revival architecture. This style of architecture can also be found in India and Brazil.

On Tuesday, May 19, 2020, The City of Opa-locka, the State of Florida, and Miami-Dade County are opening a new walk-up testing site to provide COVID-19 coronavirus testing to symptomatic and asymptomatic members of the public 12 years old and older. The location for the Community Based Testing Site (CBTS) is at Sherbondy Park, 380 Bahman Avenue, Opa-locka, FL.

It will be open daily, seven days a week from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. and will have the ability to conduct 200 tests per day. The CBTS is open to the public and free of charge. A doctor’s note or prescription is not needed to be eligible. Patients are encouraged to call (305) 499-8767 to pre-register prior to arriving at the site, but walk-ins are welcomed.

The City of Opa-locka also partners with Feeding South Florida to continue their active roles in providing support to the City of Opa-Locka community through drive-thru food distributions. The drive-through food distribution will be on Tuesday from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at Opa-locka United Methodist Church located at 630 Sharar Avenue Opa-locka.

Residents are encouraged to arrive early. All events are organized on a drive-thru, first-come, first-served basis and recipients are required to wear masks, stay in their vehicles, and open their trunks when it’s their turn in line to receive the food.
