In honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., we’ve compiled a list MLK Day events and service projects happening in Greater Miami and virtually that will take place January 17.
MIAMI’S DR. MARTIN LUTHER KING JR. DAY PARADE
Miami is hosting the 45th annual parade. The festivities begin at 11 am and stretch eight miles along Northwest 54th Street from 10th to 32nd avenues in Liberty City. The significant location marks the path Dr. King often traveled when visiting Miami.
The family-friendly outing will include high-school marching bands, student-athletes, dance and drill teams, cheerleaders, union leaders, activists, and more! The parade will end near MLK Memorial Park, where the activities will continue from 12–5 pm with live music, dance performance, cultural education, and more!

CLAY AND FREEDOM, A CELEBRATION OF MLK -BEGINNERS POTTERY CLASS OCISLY CERAMICS
On January 17, Of Course I Still Love You (OCISLY) Ceramics will host a beginners pottery class. It is meant to be a fun morning or afternoon with a friend, a date, or just solo time to celebrate. Attendees will be able to connect with their creative side and celebrate MLK’s dream to the music of the Civil Rights Movement.
Attendees can expect a pretty chill vibe with an excellent relaxing playlist in the background. It is important to note that classes are held semi-outdoor but accommodated for bad weather.
The class will include the basics about clay, pottery, and how you prep the clay, 3 lbs of clay to make simple shapes like a bowl, a vase, or an ashtray. Participants will also be able to fire their pieces, and clear glaze them.
THIS YEAR’S URBAN ONE AWARDS HONORS DR. MARTIN LUTHER KING JR.
We know COVID-19 cases have spiked, and some may not want to go out. Luckily, Urban One is hosting their annual Urban One Awards subtitled “The Soundtrack of Black America,” in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
Oscar and Grammy Award-winning singer H.E.R. will open this year’s ceremony while superstar singer Ne-Yo hosts the night. The show will have star-studded performances by Inspiration honoree Tasha Cobbs-Leonard, Kelly Price, Tyrese, Tank, Johnny Gill, and Ralph Tresvant with a special set by D-Nice. Jermaine Dupri, Marlon Wayans, and Vashawn Mitchell are set to present. Oscar, Grammy and Emmy Award-winning Jennifer Hudson, Entertainment Icon, round out the superstar group of honorees for the annual showcase along with Timbaland, Tasha Cobbs Leonard, Jimmy Jam, Terry Lewis, and more!

The two-hour telecast premieres Monday, January 17, 2022, Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, at 8:00 pm ET/7:00 pm CT on TV One and Cleo TV, a division of Urban One.
