ALPHA KAPPA ALPHA SORORITY INC. CALLS OUT ISSA RAE FOR INCLUDING OFFICIAL LETTERS AND SHIELD ON HIT SHOW ‘INSECURE.’

After months of fan anticipation, Insecure’s fifth and final season aired on Sunday. Unfortunately, its premiere episode didn’t sit right with the members of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc.

The show received backlash after Tiffany, portrayed by actress and comedian Amanda Seales, spent the entire reunion weekend decked out head-to-toe in colors and paraphernalia from “her sorority,” Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc.. Tiffany wore a $3,000 pink and green Gucci outfit. Tiffany also sported a cardigan with Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. Letters on it.

Many argued Tiffany, or anyone for that matter, should not wear the official letters or shield of Alpha Kappa Alpha unless it is by an official member who crossed the burning sands.

The sorority had released a statement claiming the show had unauthorized use of their brand.

“Dear Sorors: We were made aware of the unauthorized use of our brand on the HBO show Insecure early yesterday morning (Monday, October 25, 2021) and are taking steps to protect our brand. Please allow the Corporate Office to handle this matter. We all have a duty to protect our brand.”

In response, Amanda Seales took to social media to respond.

“I’m not a soror. Tiffany is a soror. Tiffany is a character on a TV show,” she responded on IG Live. “I didn’t write the character. I play the character. I’m not a soror. I’m an actress, and I’m playing a character on a TV show.”

Star and co-creator Issa Rae was equally dismissive of fan outrage over the use of the sorority’s official letters and shield.

Issa Rae came off as dismissive to the situation stating, “Oh shit, let me tell [HBO] to delete the one of the upcoming episodes then, hold on.”

She doubled down with a tweet that wrote, “Ain’t shit changed!” with a sorority scene from her hit Youtube series.

Insecure first took the TV screen in 2016. The show is Co-created by Issa Rae, assisted by writer-producer Larry Wilmore, and co-executive-produced by Melina Matsoukas. The series is a creative TV revolution that focuses on Black women trying to make their way in life.

Aside from that one detail, many viewers seemed to like the episode. The final season airs at 10 p.m. ET every Sunday on HBO.
