CHADWICK BOSEMAN WINS A BEST ACTOR GOLDEN GLOBE AND HIS WIFE ACCEPTS IN AN EMOTIONAL SPEECH

Black Panther star Chadwick Boseman who died in August of colon cancer, was won a Golden Globe for best performance by an actor in a drama for his role in “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom.” His wife, Taylor Simone Ledward, accepted the award on his behalf and gave an emotional speech during the virtual award show Sunday night.

“He would say something beautiful, something inspiring, something that would amplify that little voice that tells you you can, that tells you to keep going,” Ledward said during Sunday night’s ceremony. “He would thank God. He would thank his parents. He would thank his ancestors for their guidance and their sacrifices.”

“He would thank his team on set for this film—Deidra Dixon, Sian Richards, Craig Anthony, and Andrew Carlone. He would say something beautiful, something inspiring, something that would amplify that little voice inside of all of us that tells you you can, that tells you to keep going, that calls you back to what you’re meant to be doing at this moment in history.”

She finished, “And I don’t have his words, but we have to take a moment to celebrate those we love. So thank you, HFPA, for this opportunity to do exactly that. And, hon, you keep ’em coming. Thank you.”

Boseman also appeared in Spike Lee’s “Da Five Bloods,” a Vietnam drama considered for an Oscar award. Throughout his career, Boseman mastered his talent playing historical figures; some of his most remarkable performances include Jackie Robinson in “42,” music legend James Brown in “Get on Up,” and Civil Rights crusader Thurgood Marshall in “Marshall.”

Boseman is the first Black acting posthumous winner in Golden Globe history and the second overall in the category after Peter Finch. He is the fourth Black actor winner of the category, following Forest Whitaker in The Last King of Scotland, Denzel Washington in The Hurricane, and Sidney Poitier in Lilies in the Field. Boseman also makes history as the first acting winner from a film that debuted on a streaming service in this category.
