MIAMI-DADE SCHOOLS OPEN BUT SCHOOL WAS NOT IN SESSION

Miami-Dade County Public Schools (MDCPS) joins the list of 2020-2021 opening failures with Broward county who experienced a rough start on August 19, 2020.  In a press conference today, school superintendent Alberto Carvalho said that it was an issue with Cisco and out of the hands of MDCPS.

Vice-Chair for MDCPS, Dr. Steve Gallon, III stated in an interview, that questions will be asked at the committee meeting on this Wednesday, “This is Monday morning, it has been less than stellar.  We have had some tremendous challenges going into Monday morning that we anticipated with respect to the district’s transition to the K through 12 platform.  The untimely and lack of training for our teachers in a very brief period of time to make matters worse, this morning MDCPS as a district experienced challenges with dadeschools.net.”  Gallon went on to add ” The board had no involvement in this decision.  I want to be very clear…there are questions relative to the due diligence, relative to the provisions to this particular component. Those questions will be asked.

Carvalho released a statement on his twitter account saying, “We understand today was an extremely trying day for all of us. We ask for your continued patience as we utilize all available resources to resolve these issues. Teachers & administrators, I’m in awe, but not surprised, by your ingenuity & creativity to ensure students connected.”

Unlike MDCPS, Gwinnett county (Georgia) conducted a “tech check” prior to their 2020 – 2021 online learning to work through the problems before school opening.  Miami-Dade County Public Schools did not do a technical run to test the usage.  Carvahlo added that he expects the problems to continue through Tuesday.
