IT’S CENSUS DAY IN THE CITY OF OPA-LOCKA GET READY FOR THE DAY PARTY
The City of Opa-locka has partnered with the Opa-locka Community Development Corporation (OLCDC) for a 2020 Census video and initiative release. As part of its initiatives, OLCDC’s My Census Counts Coalition has designated Tuesday, June 30, 2020, as Cyber Census Day (#CyberCensusDay), which will remind City of Opa-locka residents about the Census, ways to take it, and the deadline.
“The City of Opa-locka is thrilled to partner with OLCDC to spread the word about the Census,” said City of Opa-locka Mayor Matthew Pigatt. “The Cyber Census Day Party initiatives will remind City of Opa-locka residents to complete the once-in-a-decade count. It’s a safe, easy, and fun way for our residents to get involved and make a huge impact on the City we love.”
As of June 22, 2020, the City of Opa-locka had a 2020 Census response rate of 52.6 percent, which is below the national average of 60 percent. Mayor Pigatt set a goal for the City of Opa-locka of at least 75 percent participation in this year’s Census, which the City is committed to achieving.
“The pandemic has spotlighted a lot of inequality in the City of Opa-locka, South Florida, and throughout the nation. Completing the Census ensures that the City of Opa-locka will receive funding for essential services that benefit everyone in the future,” added Mayor Pigatt. Census figures set the level of funding the City of Opa-locka will receive for public health, parks, public safety, transportation, and essential infrastructure, as well as other City services.
With the help of social influencers and OLCDC’s community partners, the goal of Cyber Census Day is to encourage posts and blogs to canvass the community and get as many people as possible to complete their Census. Cyber Census Day was created by concerned citizens looking to get their communities fair representation in Congress and federal funding in their community. Residents and partners are encouraged to share Census messages and encourage their friends and families to do the same. Additionally, OLCDC will host a virtual happy hour party today, June 30, 2020, in partnership with local deejays (such as DJ Tight) to educate viewers on why it is important to take the Census. “Completing the Census is a civic duty. Every person uses and needs the roads, schools, healthcare, and money from the federal government that’s based on the Census count. When you don’t get counted in the Census, you lose the money needed and your community suffers. It’s that simple! Get counted or you suffer the consequences,” said Dr. Willie Logan, OLCDC, CEO.
